I remember talking with Aunt Nancy this fall about those "taste moments" that stick with you for ages- when a moment, a place, a taste, the people you're around all meld into a moment you won't forget. One you can still remember the taste of long after actually tasting that certain food or drink... À la Proust's madeleine [visualize a snooty French literary analogy nose-crinkle.]
Soo for me this would include enjoying a schwenker during my first trip to Germany with Mareike, which is to say all three aspects of this word, with a Karlsberg beer in hand. That's the good Karlsberg beer, versus the other one with a C. So during my trip to Germany last week Mareike was sure to include schwenker in the plans: in fact it was her parents who really put the schwenker on the table so to speak. In the backyard they had just set up a new... I have no idea what you call it... Little house for grilling? This consists of a grill and seating for about six. It gets really toasty inside which is perfect for a cold day. The windows open so it can probably be nice on a warmer day too.
Here's the grill house from the exterior-
We stayed there in the Saarland-home of schwenker- for the second half of my visit to see Mareike and Andreas. And here is my pretty view out from the front of the house.
And walking in the city, Saarlouis-
And we stopped for a coffee because after a hearty sushi lunch, the half-Italian in the crowd demanded espresso :) I went for the large bowl of coffee à la français. One drinks coffee in the morning out of a bowl in France, they tell me. And by "they" I mean an old French colleague, a French movie I saw, and this German menu.
