La rentrée has arrived. August vacations are past and the city is full of students ready to start the school year. I meet with my classes once a week, so along with the other assistants, I've decided to include 9/11 in the lesson plan and homework for this week. I still don't know what level in English my students in first year of university are, so I'm looking forward to finding that out in order to make a better plan for the semester. Homework for the week is reading this article and answering some questions on it http://www.nytimes.com/2001/09/26/opinion/a-time-of-gifts.html
The article reminds me of my first trip to New York City in October of 2001. I didn't see Ground Zero, but I think the author was right about the atmosphere being "sublime." New Yorkers I met impressed me with their unity, bravery and love. They were still shocked to cross a corner and not see a tower where it once had been, and by the fresh memories of the terror witnessed in person that day. But like Gould wrote, there were displays of goodness everywhere else you looked. It's worth a read.
